Geddie Immigrants Arrive
At Castle Garden, New York City
Before Ellis
Island opened to American immigrants, the registration center for new
arrivers was at the tip end of Battery Park, New York City, and was known
as Castle Garden. Here in the late 19th century at least 4 presumably
Scottish Geddie family members stepped off their ships and were
registered. These Geddie's alter the tradition that all pre-20th century
Geddie immigrants arrived in the U.S. through North Carolina, which adds a
Northern context to our family history and is to date unexplored. These
are the known Castle Garden Geddie records:
